How to Achieve Research Success in Poland’s Archives

Heidi O'Guntke was born in Labrador and raised in Newfoundland.  After working a decade as a radio journalist in the four Atlantic provinces she moved to the UK.  She now lives in Scotland and is working for the Health Service as a department administrator.

Heidi took her interest in genealogy a bit further, including Newfoundland and England family trees, completing a several year course at the Institute of Heraldry and Genealogy in 2021. Her German genealogy interest started in the mid 1980's with a first letter posted to the German Embassy in an effort to trace her father's family; he had immigrated to Canada on his own after WWII and had no known family.

Heidi will use her experience , including 20 years of visiting Poland and its archives, with suggestions for alternative record sets, to help you get the most out of research time in Poland. Improved resources for personal family tourism included.

Presentation: With online and locally available records researched, the family tree just about completed and your family’s location map in the ancestral homeland shaping up, planning a trip to Poland is the next step.  Heidi will use her 20 years’ experience of Poland’s archives (successes and failures), and give suggestions for alternative record sets, to help you get the most out of research time. A few examples of personal tourism will also highlight how important family details, locked away for decades, can be triggered by one photo.
